Breath of Fire III - Chapter 1: Whelp in the Woods

Welcome to my completionist guide for the classic, Breath of Fire III! The drop rates and fishing points make this one a doozy, but we're up to the challenge, right? RIGHT? Don't get discouraged already! A new game prompts you to name the Dragon Warrior-styled, Slime-hair'd (At least for now) hero, Ryu. You can just hit start to bypass the name entry and accept the Ryu name to get the journey started.

Note: If you wait at the title screen, you can view a short prequel where Mogu and Gary talk as they head into the depths of the Dauna Mine to meet their eventually incineration with some story spliced in between.

Deep in the Dauna Mine, two oddly familiar miners, Mogu and Gary, are set to dynamite a large piece of chrysm ore with what they assume encases a long-deceased dragon. Unfortunately for them, this Whelp is very much still alive! Turn your Whelp Breath on them, or wait to auto-counter with it, to bring this preliminary battle to a quick end.

Poke around the charred remains of Mogu to acquire the ultra-rare Melted Blade sword. This is a one-of-a-kind item that cannot be found elsewhere in the game and easily missed.

Move past the now-barbecued workers and around to the upper-right to exit. You'll spook another worker and further on be engaged by a Miner and Engineer. A Whelp Breath will, again, end the battle, otherwise any attack by the duo will be met with an auto-reprise of the Breath. There are two pairs of stairs leading to lower levels of the Mine where you can fight two optional battles: both of which contain the exciting Foreman you would otherwise never see. Besides that, there are no other items to find here, but you can continue to cause more emotional scarring talking to the quivering working class in the area.

Following the wooden flooring eastward to the lower-right exit, you'll emerge outside a massive dragon skull. Attempt to leave to the right and an Operator and Worker will stop you. This time, a sudden voice stops the Whelp from breathing its fire and the Operator capitalizes: knocking it out cold with a crane. Caged, it's put on a train for who knows where. Rattle the cage using the directional buttons and it will tumble down the hillside...

Cue the young Rei, hunting for food during a harsh winter. The now very human, and naked, Ryu, has drawn the attention of a couple of Currs who are chased off by the disgruntled Rei. Taking pity on him, he takes Ryu back to his hideout where you meet the third half of our new trio, Teepo; also an orphan taken in by Rei. Putting Ryu in some pajamas and to bed, they head off to the village in search of food. In his dreams, Ryu is visited by two mysterious individuals and the game truly begins.

Now in control of Ryu, you can use the journal to save if you want before descending the stairs. Search the two chest of drawers on opposite sides of the fireplace (In a wooden treehouse) for a Vitamin, that recovers HP, and Worm, used for the fishing mini-game, then exit out to the Cedars Woods via the right-most exit.

Circle around back of the treehouse and follow the narrow path to find yourself in the Woods proper. Cross the bridge and a little to the south Ryu can climb up a hill where you will spot a Goblin. Follow the treeline along the edge to your left and use R1 to rotate the camera to find a semi-hidden bag containing an Ammonia item that revives a fallen comrade. Further to the right, in the clearing, is a chest with a Skill Ink item. This fairly uncommon item allows you to switch enemy and master skills between characters. I would use them sparingly as the only reliable method of obtaining them is trading fish.

Head back down the hill and follow the path along to the western-end of the area, along the stream, and exit. Behind the large tree, near the broken Whelp cage, is a bag with a Green Apple item that recovers a very minor amount of HP. Head south from the cage and hug the edge of the screen to find another Green Apple bag in clear sight you can scoop up, also, then use the exit at the bottom-right of the screen.

Turn south at the end of the path and look for the couple near the pond. You can search the edge of the water to find Croc Tear items infinitely. They have a 30% chance to recover your status in and outside of battle (And 5 HP), but not bad for free. Go ahead and bag as many as you want, but they only sell for 2 zenny, so don't get your hopes up about a quick money-making scheme here. Continue south from the pond to end up on the world map.

Enter the nearby McNeil Village to see both Rei and Teepo scamper away from a failed burglary. The low yield of the crops this year has made food scarce for everyone. Teepo suggests putting Ryu to work with them, but first he'll need to get our of his pajamas. All the doors in the village are currently locked, and there are no items outside, so talk to Teepo near the equipment shop, who strangely already knows Ryu's name. Rei manages to pilfer some equipment and the group hightails it to the Yraall Road where work is, apparently, mugging people, much to Ryu's displeasure.

Now fully in control of your new party and ready to begin battling enemies, let's talk about the battle formations available to you at the start because like a lot of things in Breath of Fire III, there are many missing details. There are three formations available from the start, with an additional three learned later on in the game.

Normal: There are no special characteristics for the normal formation other than the character in slot 3 is less likely to be targeted. If you don't want to have to worry about any potential negative drawbacks, this formation is always safe to use.

Attack: The point character has their physical attack raised by 50%, but their physical defense is dropped by 25%. They also have double the chance to be targeted by enemy attacks than the other two positions, but get a 100% increase in reprisal rate (A hidden stat that is set for each character). This is by far the best formation in the game despite the drop in defense, just be careful who you set at point.

Defense: All damage is reduced by 25% for the party, but agility is dropped by a staggering 50%; position 1 is also slightly more likely to be targeted than the other two. If not for the EX turn system, and the fact agility helps determine your success when stealing/escaping, this wouldn't be that bad, but there are very few situations where you would benefit from losing your own potential EX turns.

Turning to equipment, give the Melted Blade to Ryu and take the BallockKnife from Rei and equip to Teepo; giving a Dagger to Rei. The Dagger equipped to Rei will allow him to use Pilfer to steal items with lesser damage. If using the Attack formation, whomever is at point should equip Rei's Bracers and LeatherArmor, but we'll have better armor very soon.

Note: The Dagger weapon both Ryu and Teepo come equipped with cannot be found anywhere else in the game, so don't sell both by accident! Even if you don't collect every item, it's essential that you keep at least one of every weapon you find as a requirement to apprentice under an important master as early as possible a bit later on.

Each playable character also has a special field ability they can activate that is, mostly, to solve puzzles, but can be used to acquire items and zenny, as well. Ryu preforms a sword swipe that can cut small bushes, or even humans, cows, or even scarecrows, to snatch any zenny they may be carrying, but is always randomized (With no penalty unlike BoF IV). NPCs give a minuscule amount of zenny, if any, but bushes can give increments upwards of 20 or 50 zenny as seen in the screenshot above. Teepo's kick action can find zenny from NPCs, also, but is more for moving small rocks and bashing trees. Later, some trees contain items, but not any currently. Lastly, Rei can pick locked doors when at the lead of the party. You can switch the lead of your party by pressing L1. This will not effect battle formation.

Before you start battling enemies, I would caution to not get too carried away with leveling up. I, personally, would not exceed level 7  before beating the first boss and a master becomes available. However, don't overly concern yourself with this, either, as you play through the game. Masters are extremely important to building the type of characters you want, but stat-boosting items are readily available later in the game to make up any ground you may lose as long as you are willing to be patient and put in the work to get them. In short, find a healthy medium in leveling while waiting for better masters.

Head down the Yraall Road and Rei and Teepo will direct Ryu to a spot overlooking the well-worn path where they can ambush a traveler from behind some brush. Just off to the right of the spot, behind the last tree, is a semi-hidden bag with 40 zenny in it to pocket before you attempt the mugging. Ryu's new friends send him out helplessly where he collides with the massive resident, Bunyan, who warns him that Teepo and Rei are in for it he catches them! This gives the duo the bright idea to raid Bunyan's cabin in Cedar Woods while he is away. Sounds like a foolproof plan, for sure.

Yraall Road is your first opportunity to encounter enemies. The same monsters are found within the Cedar Woods, also, but we'll start covering them here. The (green) Goblins have Bent Swords Rei can use his unique Pilfer ability to steal. These aren't good at all, and can be purchased later on, as well as found, but are easy to swipe and sell for 25 zenny. You are going to want to keep at least two extra of these in your inventory for later, also.

Note: Agility plays a key role in the calculation of a successful steal. Also, if you flee the battle, you will keep any stolen goods, which is a nice tactic to keep your levels in check.

To learn enemy skills, use the examine option of the battle menu and target the enemy. If you are successful, and the skill can be learned, an ! will appear over the character's head as seen in the screenshot above. If the skill cannot be learned, a ? will show instead. There are no special formulas: each skill is set a difficulty to learn and requires patience to acquire. If you take out the BossGbln that accompanies them, Goblins will use the learnable Unmotivate skill. Unmotivate does absolutely nothing and once learned, you should go into the menu and select note to send it to the skill pool you can access from the camp diary on the world map. This is also where you can trade enemy skills between characters with Skill Ink. If your active skill list is full, you cannot learn new ones from enemies or masters.

Note: You can use the examine command, instead of defend, to avoid countering an enemy's attack. This is incredibly useful when attempting to steal items.

Note: If any of your character's fall in battle and are not resurrected before its end, that character's maximum HP will decrease (Represented by a yellow number in the menu). This can only be corrected by staying at an inn (Or the tree house, for now); resting at camp will not suffice to return your HP to its maximum number.

As you've probably seen, the BossGbln throws out the learnable Influence skill at the beginning of every battle and will run if they have no Goblin subordinate. Do you best to learn this on Ryu and keep it on him always throughout the game for reasons we will cover when the time comes. Outside of those special times, the skill is, essentially, useless against most every enemy as it requires them to have 1 or 0 intelligence to take hold.

Rei can lift the excellent Waistcloth armor from the BossGblns, also, with some effort. Try to get three of these for our heros as it is better than anything we can find soon. These also sell for an excellent 150 zenny!

Note: Items that are not stolen have a chance to be dropped, as well, but stealing the item first has no bearing on whether the enemy drops their normally dropped item. In the case of the BossGbln you may see the Waistcloth, a Brass Helm, or both dropped. Stealing the former does not increase the chance of the latter dropping.

The birdlike Ripper hold the Blind enemy skill to add to your list. Blind is a weaker than normal physical attack that can, potentially, inflict blindness and reduce enemy accuracy. It has its uses, one of which is talked about below. Try to learn this with Teepo as it will prove useful a little later on and save you from having to use a Skill Ink.

The plentiful Eye Goo has a bit of a difficult skill to learn. On its tenth turn it will use Snooze. The problem is having to wait another ten turns if none of your characters copy it. Snooze restores a small percentage of the character's HP and AP at the cost of putting them to sleep. Later, once you can null the sleep status effect, it can be useful since you can activate it an infinite number of times to recover your AP. Rei can snatch Healing Herbs from Eye Goos, as well, which is a much better option than buying them right now.

Mage Goos cast the lowest fire-based spell, Burn, that you can learn. Mage Goos also have Healing Herbs to Pilfer like their blue counterparts.

Note: If you inflict blind on the Eye or Mage Goo, you get a hefty increase in experience from them! I wouldn't get too carried away with this, however, and gain too many levels as talked about earlier in the chapter.

Note: You can steal a Vitamin from the Gongheads that restore 100 HP and will be incredibly valuable throughout the first half of the game.

While exploring the world map, you'll notice a ! appear above Ryu's head that will take you to a semi-randomized battleground. A single item bag can always be found there and contents vary depending on the area. In the Yraal Region, you can sometimes find Bandanas and Bracers equipment here. While you can purchase them for a small amount in McNeil, which we'll talk about soon, for those that want a save a little coin, you can use this option to outfit your characters. Vitamin can show up here, as do Poppers (Only during winter), which is a more advanced lure than the Old Popper, buy buyable later.

Two additional monsters show up on the world map battlefields, too. The Man Trap can be a bit dangerous at the beginning levels, but try to get Rei to steal a PointedStick from them. You want to add this to your inventory to go with the other weapons you need to train under an important master. Have Teepo cast Flare to heavy damage the grotesque thing.

Gooey are of no threat to the party, remaining entirely paralyzed, but Rei can Pilfer the Marbles item from them. Although the item description is "appears valuable" they sell for almost nothing in a basic shop. Still, Gooeys are the best place in the game to pick up this item. The static gooster also holds a secret we won't be able to uncover for a long, long time. It is immune to blind, also, if you were wondering.

With everything else covered, let's explore McNeil properly. Just up from the Yraall Road is the Farm. Take the dirt path off to the right, across from the fields, and you'll find yourself outside the walls of Mayor McNeil's mansion. Just up the road is a hut where you can score a Vitamin in the drawers. There's nothing else here for us now, so exit the Farm.

In McNeil village, there is a now a bag with a Vitamin along the hedges beside the inn.

Inside the item shop, search the display next to the shopkeeper to acquire a Molotov item that casts Flare when used in battle. You're eventually going to want to pick up the Wooden Rod and some lures here, but that can wait until later.

Next door is the equipment shop with a very grumpy owner. What you get here is going depend on the amount of items you stole and can sell. You are fine to continue the story with just Bandanas, Bracers, and Waistcloths. Rei will be leaving the party temporarily and we will find an additional BallockKnife for him, so he is fine with the Dagger. If you went crazy with Bent Swords and Waistcloths to sell, go ahead and get a Bronze Sword, two Cloth Shields (Will find a third), and three Brass Helms, but all of this can wait.

On the east-side of McNeil you can enter the two houses and find an Healing Herb in the first, and an Antidote in the second by searching the chest of drawers.

Before we raid Bunyan's hut, head back to Rei and Teepo's hideout and descend the ladder in the back of the kitchen that the pajama'd Ryu couldn't use. There's a shelf with a Healing Herb. Make sure you have taken this item, plus the ones from the chest of drawers upstairs because they are eventually missable!

From the hideout, exit south, near the rugged traveler, and wrap around the Woods to the east, taking the second dirt path leading south, to find Bunyan's humble dwelling. Put Rei in the lead of your party to pick the lock and the group will split up inside. Rei's tail knocks a plate off the table, but Ryu's quick reflexes saves a disturbance. This also slyly adds a Plate item to your inventory that is the only one in the game, so don't sell it even though it "appears valuable"! Move Ryu down the ladder and into the storeroom where you can take Beef Jerky from the shelf, a rather obscure item that restores 100 HP, but later buyable. Unfortunately, Bunyan has returned home and made good on his threat to Teepo and Rei!

Fortunately, the big woodsman is willing to let the party go free assuming that Rei travels to Mt. Glaus for some unspecified purpose. In the meantime, Ryu and Teepo get to put in some hard labor: chopping wood. This is a simple mini-game that is all about timing. Simply hit triangle whenever the log begins to tip toward Ryu, as seen in the screenshot above, and you'll succeed each time. Even if you struggle a bit, you only need to cut 10 or so logs to progress the story. Afterward, head out to the world map and enter the ? area to the northeast of Cedar Woods to follow Rei to Mt. Glaus.

Note: If you've played Breath of Fire IV, in which many mini-games had a game score that advanced Ryu's dragon forms, you may wonder if III has a similar system, but it does not.

The first thing you notice when crossing the bridge in the new area is a boulder being propped up by a smaller rock. Switch to Teepo and give the rock a swift kick to plug the stream and make it transversal. Head down into the stream and follow it to the right and then up to a treasure chest with a Weather Vane item that casts Typhoon in battle. This chest is missable as once spring comes to the region, the stream will no longer be blocked!

Note: Man Traps appear in this area and can be a challenge with only the two little ones. Thankfully, you can keep them asleep by having Teepo cast Flare and Ryu with Burn.

Northeast from the stream is an open area with several forked paths. Near the center is a rock Teepo can bash away to find a Vitamin in the hole. Just north from there is another rock you can move with 120 zenny underneath to pocket.

From there, hug the wall to the left of the zenny hole and follow it back down and then closely around to the northwest. You'll spot a chest behind a tree with 80 zenny inside and another rock Teepo can remove. This hole has a coveted Coin to add to our inventory. Coins are a fishing lure that have a limited number in the game and required to access fish shops. Continue west to the exit and back out to the world map where Mt. Glaus is just steps away. Camp first to rest and save and if you don't already have a Bronze Sword, I would recommend you go back and purchase one from McNeil. It's not a bad idea to stock up on several Croc Tears or buy a few Antidotes from the item shop, either.

Cross the rope bridge at the base of Mt. Glaus and take a left to descend down. Curve around to the bottom-right, near the side of the rope bridge, where an Antidote satchel is waiting. Speaking of Antidotes, the Curr monsters here with their poison Chlorine breath can be brutal when paired with multiple monsters. Poison persists after battle, and while you can use Ryu's Purify spell, I would rely upon the free Croc Tears from Cedar Woods outside of battle and use Antidotes in a pinch in battle for its recovery. Poison will not resolve from resting at camp either; you must go to an inn, to note, but don't be afraid to leave Mt. Glaus to rest and recover Ryu's MP if you need to.

Note: The Puff Goo encountered on Mt. Glaus can be blinded to receive more EXP just like its weaker brethren.

Return back up to near the rope bridge and move north to see a massive slope in the mountain. Ascend via the path up on the left-hand-side and at the top slide down the slope from the position seen in the screenshot above to find a Heavy Caro fishing lure item. This is actually the best worm-type lure in the game and very hard to come by, so when we start fishing, don't lose it.

Back at the top again, slide down from this angle to pick up the Cloth Shield, that is for sale in McNeil and better than the Bracers, at the bottom. If you care about getting as many stat-boosting items as you can, I would recommend you leave Mt. Glaus and save before moving across the rope bridge just beyond the massive slope.

With night falling, Ryu and Teepo seek shelter in a nearby cabin only to find Rei inside. He thinks that Bunyan sent him to Mt. Glaus to kill the monster that has been terrorizing McNeil. Unfortunately, the two kids presence has, for some reason, limited Rei's ability to battle it. In the morning, the monster's cry can be heard outside the cabin. Make sure to equip Rei with anything new and reset your battle formation before heading outside.

This isn't really a boss battle, but a precursor to the one to come a little later on. Have Ryu cast Protect on the party and try to nab the strength-raising Power Food item from the Nue with Rei's Pilfer, but be prepared to be patient to get it. Once 210 HP has been inflicted, it will flee, but you can have Ryu cast Heal on it, or use Healing Herbs, to give yourself more chances to get the item. Its Nue Stomp can do a moderate amount of damage, so be prepared to heal yourself, as well. Besides that, Teepo's Flare/Simoon and physical attacks is all you need. Afterward, you can rest back inside the cabin and save at the statue.

Note: Teepo is a temporary playable character, so don't waste any items like the Power Food on him!

Past the dragon icon statue, continue up the mountain through the felled trees (From the Nue, no doubt) and move left, then up and around to the bag containing Vitamins overlooking a cave entrance. Vitamins (With an S) recover the entire party by 100 HP and are surprisingly rare, so only use them in an emergency. Enter into the cave below to find blood splotches on the ground. A wounded and cornered prey awaits.

Note: Rei can lift the default Clothes armor from Zombies in the cave which makes for decent sell fodder at 25 zenny. You can purchase them later in the game, however.

The Bat monster has the Gloom enemy skill to learn, however, getting it to actually use the thing can present an issue. Gloom will only be executed if they are in critical condition; which is 1 HP left, and with only 6 HP max, you can see the problem. Thankfully, Burn is weak enough to do exactly 5 HP of damage, as long as you are not grossly overleveled. If you are, don't worry about it: we can come back later to guarantee to get it to 1 HP. Gloom attempts to turn the enemy into an undead creature; making it weak to holy and curative magic: something that can be exploited more times than you would think!

Follow the trail of blood and take the first left and the exit there. Inspect the massive pile of bones for a Bent Sword, then look for a satchel with a Molotov item around the left-hand-side. Continue to track the blood and take the next left presented to you, also. The trail goes cold next to the water, but you can raid the skeleton nearby for 200 zenny.

Teepo suggests the Nue fled into the water to escape so return back the way you came and head further north. Take the path right, then down, to another long-deceased bag of bones with a BallockKnife. A little further north you can turn right, again, this time to a Talisman accessory that slightly boosts your resistance to instant-death attacks. Heading left will take you to the Nue boss fight where you can steal another Power Food, so you may want to return to the cabin to rest and save beforehand.

Teepo's plan will have you dive off into the waters and float down to the Nue's cave below where the injured beast is waiting at the back of the cave. Like the first battle, Rei can lift another Power Food here, but firstly, have Ryu cast Protect on everyone and use Blind on the Nue; this will foil his numerous reprisals. If you want, you can use Gloom and dump a Vitamin on it for 100 damage, also, but I mention that mostly for fun and not smart item conservation. Teepo can throw out Simoon for a large amount of damage while Rei Pilfers and Ryu attacks/heals if you get poisoned or HP gets low. The only thing you really need to be concerned of is when the notice pops up that "Nue howls with fury". It's then about to unleash a moderately powerful Jolt spell on the entire party. Thankfully, this one casting exhausts its AP for the remainder of the battle.

With its final breath, the Nue protects the cave entrance with its very body. Choosing to go inside anyway, the party finds the Nue's dead cubs...which she futilely tried to provide for by pillaging McNeil even though they had long since been gone. Diving back into the waters, the group meets Bunyan at the base of Mt. Glaus. They have won the respect of Bunyan, and the village, but through a harsh lesson on life and death.

Suikoden IV - Speed/Item Maximization

Welcome! This is a quick and efficient guide aimed as utilizing Suikoden IV's new game + feature to complete the game as quickly as possible while building your inventory.

The items that carry over, but are limited in their availability, are as followed:
  • Thunder Rune
  • Cyclone Rune x2
  • Rage Rune x2
  • Flowing Rune x2
  • Mother Earth Rune x2
  • Prosperity Rune x2
  • Fury Rune
  • Skunk Rune
  • Fortune Rune
  • God Hand
In terms of outfitting your characters to the best of their ability, only the Runes, in particular the Thunder and Fury Runes, are necessary for multiple games. The equipment pieces are solid, but outclassed by the bonuses of the Goblin set, or other armor. Every other item in the game can either be purchased, created, or does not carry over to a new game +. I'll be guiding you quickly through the game to obtain these items as well as a few others that I consider a pain to get normally and worthwhile (Like Mushrooms/Mixed Herbs), but not out of the way enough to hamper your speed. Only the minimal amount of Stars of Destiny necessary to accomplish our goals will be covered, to note.

A properly outfitted team of Lazlo, Jeane, Paula, and Kika are more than enough to take care of any encounter in the game easily; including the final boss. Feel free to mix-and-match any characters you like, however, but these are my personal preferences. Below are my recommendations for equipment throughout the game:

Lazlo:

Ogre Helm
Ogre Mail
Ogre Breath
Ogre Boots
Magic Ring  x2
Power Ring
Prosperity/Wizard/Warrior Rune

Paula:

Goblin Court Hat
Goblin Overcoat
Goblin Beads
Goblin Clogs
Power Ring x3
Water Rune
Lightning Rune
Wizard/Warrior Rune

Jeane:

Venus Comb
Venus Armor
Venus Gloves
Venus Anklet
Magic Ring
Power Ring x2
Lightning Rune
Water Rune

Kika:

Ogre Helm
Ogre Mail
Ogre Breath
Ogre Boots
Power Ring x3
Warrior Rune

Note: You can, of course, use the Thunder, Fury, or the other limited available runes to advance even quicker through the game, but you have to remember to remove them before the final dungeon! More than once I found myself forgetting this, so I have opted not to use them at all. You don't really need them, either!

If you are a player more interested in obtaining all available items that normally have to be created, as opposed to just getting the rare items and getting out, I have included a section at the end of the guide that you can use to maximize your inventory in this way, as well as some other items that may be of note to you. With all that said, let's begin!

Razril
  • In the First Engagement purposely get hit with a cannon shell to end it quickly.
  • Auto battle w/Glen and Katarina. Then pick losing choices for the duel.
  • Talk to Keneth, then Jewel, and watch the speech in the Hall of Knights.
  • Head to the port town and light all of the citizen's torches lined up and talk to Glen, Katarina, Keneth, Paula, Tal, Jewel, and Lord Vingerhut. Grab the Mushroom chest in the backstreets and retire to the Hall of Knights.
  • Meet Snowe outside the Hall and during training pick Paula and whomever else you would like (Keneth for Lightning Rune and Ogre equipment or Tal for Goblin equipment are recommended) for your partners.
  • Outfit Lazlo and Paula with the above-mentioned equipment. Go into town and visit the rune shop to give Lazlo the Prosperity Rune, if you want to maximize your Potch, Wizard for magic, or the Warrior for more physically-based, and remove Snowe's Water Rune and fix it to Paula. Keneth can keep the Lightning Rune or a Warrior Rune; Tal should use the latter.
  • Go to the Razril inn and snag the Treasure Map (God Hand) from the shelf in the upper-right corner, then talk to the lady outside the inn that is catty-cornered down and to the left from the entrance for a Mushroom.
  • Head for the port and take the Document to Middleport. When there, deliver it to the man at the port, then sharpen your character's, except Snowe's, weapons to 3. Sail around and fight until level 5 before returning to Razril.
  • Agree to return to Middleport for another job. Talk to the merchant and agree to destroy the pesky creature for them. Sail around Middleport until you encounter the Damp Hairball; defeat it and get your reward in Middleport before going back.
  • Meet Ramada at the Hall of Knights for the special job. Exit the Hall, then reenter, exit again to grab Snowe outside, then talk to Ramanda to start the journey. Sail northeast toward Illuya Island.
  • Talk to Snowe to start the battle against the Pirate Brandeau. Water and Earth rune cannons are best, but you would have to try hard to lose. Lazlo with Ogre equipment will decimate the next battle with Peck and Brandeau. Afterward, win the duel and you're back in Razril.
  • Strip Snowe of all all his equipment firstly, then go to the item shop in town, and back to the Hall of Knights. Grab Glen's Meal and deliver it and the Medicine to his room. Exit the barracks for the Dario attack to begin. Tell all four characters "Let's Fight!" and move to the port and board the ship by talking to the knight.
  • The Retribution ship battle is also difficult to lose. Set Jewel for your rune cannon and you can go up the middle and get between the two ships and blast both of them on the second turn. Victory is elementary after that.
  • Go to Commander Glen's room, then rest in your own room. Move to the port and tell the knight you want to use the ship the first time to be given a Giant Bird's Feather. These are needed to make Goblin equipment. If you decline the first time, he will not offer the Feather at all if you try again!
  • Return to port and carry Glen's Meal to his room again. Destroy the pirates in the subsequent battles and find Commander Glen on the roof of the Hall of Knights. Defeat the shadow in the dream and you're done with the game's opening.
Deserted Island
  • Slap some equipment on Chiepoo and sail around and fight battles until you are on Troy's ship. Speak with Troy and rest in the below chamber. Auto battle against Troy and Colton and fight your way off the ship.
  • Adrift again, fight more battles until the Water Dragon boss occurs.
  • On the Deserted Island, grab your characters and enter the cave all the way to the last screen with the healing spring and use an Escape Talisman to quickly exit. Enter and exit all three other areas off the Beach and agree with your characters to escape the Island.
  • The fastest way off is to have Lazlo make Rope each time; which the three parts are right there on the Beach, enter the cave down to the spring where you meet Lilin, grab the free accessory, use an Escape Talisman to exit, and complete the day by retiring to the Boulder Shade. Do this three times.
  • Head through the Dense Woods to fight the Boss Crab. Just defend in the first battle to bring it to a quicker close. For the second, have Paula cast Breath of Ice, and if you have Keneth, use Berserk Blow to wipe out all the Wild Crabs with it. If you don't get a Giant Crab's Shell after the battle, I would, personally, reset. The drop rate is high, but not guaranteed like the materials from the Water Dragon.
  • Slay the next dream shadow and tell your partners you are ready to escape the Island. More sailing and fighting until you face-off with the Killer Rays.
  • Talk to your characters onboard the oar-less vessel and you'll be rescued by the Obel ship. Talk to Desmond twice to advance to their kingdom.
Obel
  • Right off the ship, search the barrel directly to your right for a Treasure Map (Thunder Rune). Drop by the blacksmith and sharpen everybody's weapons to 6 and attach a Lightning Rune to Paula's now-open left-hand slot before talking to Lino at the Palace. Chiepoo could use a Lightning Rune, too.
  • After seeing Lino, head into the Obel Ruins. Run down the corridor, then up the stairs and through the door to the top-left. Take a right and grab the Magic Hand chest, then through the path on the opposite end.
  • Down another L-shaped path and snatch the One-Piece Dress treasure near the junction you should exit through. Turn right at the next fork and through another crooked path. Head up the stairs and exit to the left of the save point. Run straight down the path to the boss.
  • The Guard can actually be a bit of a challenge. You have to fight this guy twice, but the first is much worse; so use most of your spells, but save a few Kindness Drops and Eternal Ordeals.
  • Exit past where you fought the boss and open the chest for some Mushrooms and other items. Don't talk to Rikie, but instead search the tree for a Treasure Map (Mother Earth Rune). After the talk, try to leave and you'll have to fight the less-threatening Guard again. Since it's gained arms, it tends to only attack one character as opposed to the entire group.
  • Head past the palace and around the cliffside to the cavern headquarters and rest in your room. Talk to Desmond, then reform your party (Without Louise). Outside, have Manu take you to the port, but go back inside the city and recruit Ornan hanging out in the blacksmith/armor section. A recruit is required to advance the story.
  • Use the patrol ship and sail to the large white dot on the map to trigger some battles. Sailing back to Obel pits you against Dario in a ship battle again. He can barely damage you, so you can use whomever you like for the rune cannon, but Tov's fire element will either beat, or match, Dario's ship.
  • Back in Obel, stop at the inn and chase Cedric back to headquarters to recruit him by talking to Louise. Talk to Desmond who points you towards Nay afterward. Use Manu to drop down to the port and hop back in the patrol ship and sail directly north to Nay.
  • At Nay, sharpen your weapons to 7 at the blacksmith and go through the events with Oleg at the inn's High Ground. After checking the camera in the morning, head for the beach for a scene, then sail back to Obel and Lino's palace.
  • After meeting with Lino, fight Akaghi and Mizuki on the path to the headquarters and report back to the palace. That night, use the Rune of Punishment on the cliff and begin the Defending Obel ship battle. Put Keneth with the Lightning Rune as your rune cannon and sling rune shells with the flag ship while the Obel ship launches fire-elemental ones at the other. If you don't have Keneth, or he lacks the Lightning Rune, just use Desmond w/wind element as your rune cannon to either match, or beat, the flag ship. Slay another shadow afterward.
  • Go out to the cliff for a scene, then enter the headquarter's war room. You then have to go around the city and corral the citizens onto the ship. You can remove Flare's equipment for some additional items. Talk to the man walking around the item shop, then exit over to the blacksmith area and get both woman by the laundry. Further down by the appraiser and trading post, recruit both Yu and Adrienne, then get the guy with the blue shirt on the docks and return to the ship. Set sail from the war room to end this portion of the game.
Recruitment Drive
  • Reform your party and give the Iron Hammer to Adrienne and sharpen Lazlo and Paula's weapons to 9. We are about to recruit both Jeane and Kika, so don't waste the Potch on the other's weapons.
  • Sail to Mordo Island that is northwest of Obel and then reboard the ship to add the location to your teleportation list.
  • Head back to Nay and pick up the Message Bottle on the beach. From there, march across the Stonecutter's Field to Nay-Kobold and you'll run into Viki. Go inside the settlement and back out and Viki will join you on the other side of the Suspension Bridge. Use the Glowing Hand Mirror to return to the Dauntless.
  • Sail east and dock at Na-Nal. Head for the inn and recruit Manu for ease of moving around the Dauntless. Take the path beside the item shop to the open-air bath and talk to the man there about Jeane. Search the crates beside the armor shop for a Treasure Map (Cyclone Rune), then talk to the man standing around nearby who also mentions Jeane.
  • Ask about Jeane to recruit her at the rune shop. Talk to Reinhold a little further in and agree to duel Mitsuba in the square to recruit both of them. Back to the Dauntless, put Viki in your party. Remove Viki's Shell Sandals and equip her with a Wind Rune. Add Jeane to your party and outfit her as outlined at the beginning of the guide. Make sure to remove all the equipment from the character you were using before Jeane.
  • Teleport to Mordo Island, leave, and sail southeast to Donut Island to pick up Rene. Go down to the fourth deck library, talk to Rene, then go back to Donut and dig up the Rage Rune. This is required before she will analyze any other maps. Back to Mordo again, then sail southwest down to the Nest of Pirates.
  • Kika and her pirate gang join up at the Nest of Pirates. Return to the Dauntless and outfit Kika with the recommendations at the start of the guide; removing the equipment from the character she displaced. Dock back at the Nest and view the scenes with Katarina before returning to the Dauntless to battle Snowe.
  • Put Jeane (Lightning) and Pablo (Fire) as your rune cannons for the Dauntless and Viki (Wind) with the Grishend. Jeane and Viki's power is more than enough to overwhelm both ships with damage. You can use Pablo against Snowe's ship if you want to play it totally safe.
  • Sail all the way northwest to Razril after Snowe. Make sure to execute him when given the prompt to save some time having to ship battle him again later. If it matters to you, this doesn't automatically disqualify Helmut from joining later.
  • Next, sail over to Hermitage Island. Remove Sigurd, Hervey, and Dario's equipment since they are currently in your party then head into the forest. After the scenes with Elenor, open the chest at the back of her house for a Skunk Orb. Lazlo will have to fight a Horned Behemoth by himself at the end of the wooded path before he can grab the Crest and Green Bottle and return them to Agnes.
  • At the front of the house there are two chests to open: one has a Copper Hammer and the other a Treasure Map (Flowing Orb). Enter the war room and duel Lino to take charge of the Golden Seal. Enter the war room a second time afterward to get direction to go to Middleport for the story. Lastly, return to the Nest of Pirates and recruit Katarina in Kika's room who has now recovered.
  • Reform your party and take the Copper Hammer to Adrienne and sharpen your weapons to 12. Warp to Na-Nal Island square and defeat Maxine is who loitering around there to start her recruitment process. Back to Mordo Island, again, but this time enter the bath itself to battle the three Lo siblings and recruit them. Add Lo Seng to your party and remove his Prosperity Rune back at the ship. From there, you are free to sail west to Middleport.
Uniting the Islands
  • Getting near Middleport pits you against the Moving Isle boss. Kika won't be able to attack, but can use Mega Medicine while you throw out Eternal Ordeal and Thunder Runner/Soaring Bolt/Furious Blow. You might want to grab Deborah and Oskar in the inn afterward for the latter's drop rate increase.
  • Once you've met with Reinbach II, head back to your ship and put Lino in your party, give him some equipment, and sharpen his weapon. Warp to Nay, leave, and sail east to Na-Nal.
  • Flatten the Kooluk soldiers stationed on the beach and you'll be thrown in jail until nightfall. Trek up the Gorge to the Great Elven Tree and pilfer their Elven Remedy. Grab the Stone of Strength in the chest inside the Chief's house and attempt to leave the island to be back in jail again.
  • Talk to your party members and then rush down the Gorge again to fight three consecutive battles with Kooluk soldiers and head back to the ship. At this point, Paula should have her head rune slot open for either the Wizard or Warrior Rune.
  • Dump Lino for your other character; you can leave his equipment since we'll be using him again later. Sail west back to Nay and move up to the Stonecutter's Field and challenge Maxine again. Visit the nameless Nay Chief's house and show him the Golden Seal only to be asked to come back later. Use the Glowing Hand Mirror, then redock at Nay to pick up Kevin and Pam at the Chief's house.
  • Enter the Dauntless' war room to get direction to head for Razril. Warp to Middleport and put Katarina in your party, removing her Guard Robe and Pointy Hat, as you approach the port town.
  • The Regaining Razril ship battle is laughably easy. Jeane/Palbo on the Dauntless and Viki w/wind on the Grishend is still all you need. The Gaien Ship is a turncoat on the second turn and will do some damage to the flag ship for you and its demise is all you need to win the battle. Finish it with Jeane for damage or Pablo to beat/match and let Viki spar with the other ship.
  • Landing at Razril, there's a new chest on the port with some Platinum. You have to go around the town and send certain citizen's to the Hall of Knights for your speech. Start by heading up the narrow path towards the inn: there are three people there to wrangle. Outside the inn there is another citizen to send to the Hall and inside you can recruit Konrad (With Katarina) and Maxine. You may consider grabbing Basil outside the inn if you want Discovered Money for support.
  • The strip containing the shops has a woman for the Hall, while outside the Hall there are two men. Inside the Hall, there are two last women before you can give the speech. When dusk falls, go back inside the Hall of Knights and open the first chest on your right for the Silver Hammer, then head for port for a scene before finally resting at the inn.
  • Use the Glowing Hand Mirror to return to the ship, replace Katarina, and take the Silver Hammer to Adrienne to sharpen your weapons to 15. From there, descend down into the bowels of the ship's fifth corridor and talk to Pablo who mentions Warlock in Middleport.
  • Warp to Middleport and make for Warlock's house on the left-most-side of the town center. There's a chest with a Mushroom outside the house while inside needing to answer "24" to the chest to be dropped down below where you can enter the tunnel to the catacombs.
  • Take a right at the first fork, then the one to the left, and open the chest for the Great Earth Armor. Return back to the entrance, taking the left-sided path and hugging the wall to your right through to the next area. Follow the path straight, then veer to the right to be taken to the Ivory Robe chest, then backtrack to the start and take the left-most fork to the next screen.
  • Keep to your right and you'll have to fight a Land Dragon which should be no problem with Kika's Falcon Rune and lvl 15 weapon. Further in, talk to Warlock to recruit him and Glowing Hand Mirror back to the ship.
  • Put Konrad, Maxine, and Warlock into your party and replace their Rage, Flowing, Mother Earth, and Cyclone Runes with their lesser-elemental counterparts. This isn't needed for the Flowing Rune, however, but they still need runes for the upcoming ship battles. Also, remove Warlock's Magic Robe.
  • Warp to Hermitage Island and sail over to the Nest of Pirates for story purposes. You'll then need to sail to Obel to reclaim it which is done quicker by warping to Donut and sailing from there.
  • To start the For Obel's Freedom ship battle, assign the Gaien ship with the Grishend. Put Maxine on rune cannon for the Grishend and Viki for the Gaien ship; the Dauntless only needs Jeane. Maxine and Viki will either beat, or match the ship closest to them, while Jeane on the Dauntless is all you need for Colton's flag ship. Really easy. When the private fleet shows, simply sail up the middle with the Dauntless and have Jeane use the rune cannon for a one-shot end.
  • Use the Rune of Punishment on the kamikaze ships and slay your final shadow. Go to the deck of the Dauntless for a scene and avoid the war room.
Wrapping Up
  • Warp to the Nest of Pirates, without Kika, and talk to the female pirate at the table for an easy Mermaid Bracelet.
  • Go down to the fourth deck corridor library and talk to Rene to have her analyze all of your Treasure Maps and make them available to dig up.
  • Reform your party and teleport to Nay. Sail northwest across the entire map to Mountain Mass Island. Although it does vary, the majority of the Treasure Maps we picked up will be dug up here. Before that, ascend the mountain and the top-most-left fork has a chest with a Golden Hairball (Chance for a Stone of Evasion drop), five Diamonds, and a Prosperity Rune. A little further up the path is another chest with Mixed Herbs.
  • Dig up the treasures for a Thunder, Flowing, Mother Earth, and Cyclone Rune, plus the God Hand. One, or more, may have spawned at Lime Shelf Island that is southwest of the Nest of Pirates, or rarely, Mordo.
  • To win the Fury Rune from the training hall on the fifth deck corridor, place Viki, Pablo, Maxine, Warlock, Katarina, Konrad, Sigurd, and Hervey in the two alternate ship parties. If for some reason you aren't using Jeane or Paula, I would replace Sigurd and Hervey with them. If you have Magic Canceller accessories, equip each of your active party with one to make things easier. You should have little problem winning the five consecutive battles with this setup.
  • For the finale, you need an additional party of four to fight a fairly easy boss. I would recommend Lino, Sigurd, Katarina, and Keneth, but feel free to use whomever you want as long as you have a mage with a Water Rune. You can just auto-equip their armor for now, since you won't be fighting the boss with it equipped, but make sure to sharpen their weapons to 12 and fight a few battles in Na-Nal with the Kooluk soldiers to bring their levels to 40. That is more than enough. I would highly recommend not bring any other mage like Viki, Warlock, or Maxine since they will be needed for the final ship battle.
  • Entering the war room and heading for Fort El-Eal is the point of no return, so make sure you have finished all of your business for this playthrough!
Fort El-Eal
  • Inside the war room, set your infiltration party and go back to Lazlo's room to rest. Return to the war room and give the okay you are ready. That night, just go back to Lazlo's room to rest again, then go up to the deck to arrive at El-Eal. Climb up the cliffside with Elenor and the final ship battle will start.
  • The Final Engagement is a lot harder than any of the other ship battles, but you can win it, usually, just by attrition with your overpowered mages. The flag ship has a firing distance advantage and no weakness, as well. Set Jeane on the Obel ship, Maxine on the Grishend, Konrad on the Gaien ship, and Warlock and Viki on the Dauntless. If you didn't send Katarina or Keneth on the infiltration, they can join with the Gaien ship for matching with lightning, but not necessary.
  • The Grishend, with Maxine, will either beat/match when facing the left-most ship and the Dauntless can hit them from the side while waiting for the flag ship to approach and counter them with Viki if targeted. Move the Gaien and Obel ship right-side to intercept the lightning/water ship. Try to engage with Jeane on the Obel ship to beat/match and use the Gaien ship with Konrad to hit from the side. The best-case scenario is to be able to surround the Kooluk flag ship with all four of your ships and be able to hit it from the side without reprisal.
  • Be warned: the enemy loves to board your ship during this battle which will often prove disastrous, but still, with the power of your rune cannons, you should be able to deplete the flag ship's HP before all of your ships are destroyed.
  • When the battle is won, enter Fort El-Eal with Elenor and rush for the fourth floor. Right outside the door to the rune cannon, make sure to remove all four character's equipment so it will carry over to your next playthrough! You won't need it to beat the boss. As long as you brought a character with a Water Rune, which you should have two in Katarina and Sigurd if you used my suggestions, Graham Cray is a pushover even without equipment.
  • Back as Lazlo, form your party and again head for the rune cannon room on the fourth floor. Just outside the door to the cannon is a chest with Mixed Herbs and the Fortune Rune. Grab the Stair Room Key on the desk in the office juxtaposed to the cannon, then descend the Fort again. If there are any runes you want to remove from your party and take to the next playthrough; for example: Fury, Thunder, Prosperity, return to the Dauntless and de-equip them before climbing the spiral stairs to the final boss. You won't have another opportunity.
  • The Key opens the door to the stairs on the second floor. There's a Magic Canceller in the chest on the ground floor and a Mixed Herbs treasure just before you get to the top the final save point. Inside, select to refuse to answer Cray's questions to speed through the dialogue.
  • The Giant Tree can either be a breeze or a pain the neck if it decides to use the wind-based breath that puts everyone to sleep all the time. Kika with Ogre equipment and a Warrior Rune will whittle down its HP quickly with the Falcon Rune, however, and with Jeane and Paula using Furious Blow/Thunder Runner and keeping healed with Kindness Rain it's doubtful you will have any problems outside of being put to sleep. Lazlo can chip in with Eternal Ordeal if has a Wizard Rune or physical attacks if using Warrior; just ignore the two Seeds of Light and focus on the Tree itself. Also, make sure to activate Rush whenever the Tree's leaves turn white and avoid that turn's ultimate attack.
  • After the battle make absolutely sure to remove everybody's equipment before you reboard the Dauntless by talking to Rakgi! Duel with Troy and see the final shadow event to bring the game to a close. Unfortunately, every single time you play you have to sit through the long credits to get to the save screen.
Item Considerations

Below are some other items that may be of interest to players to add to their inventory each play, but require adding more time to your play than they are worth, in my opinion. Items that cannot be purchased and must be created with materials by either Adrienne or Phil, but might save time in the long run mainly for players that want 99 of every item.
  • Necklace: Chest on the Deserted Island where you fight the Boss Crab.
  • Dragon Head Piece: Treasure Map in the boxes outside the bath on Mordo Island.
  • Battle Suit: Remove from Bartholomew, Helga, and Rachel.
  • Scale Mail: Remove from Selma and Eugene.
  • Magic Robe: Unequip from Ted (Recruitment requires 70 Stars of Destiny).
  • Ninja Garb: Treasure Map on the shelf inside the Nay leader's house.
  • Ancient Vestment: Treasure Map on the table onboard the Mystery Merchant Ship.
  • Gauntlet: Remove from Rita, Bartholomew, Aldo, and Eugene.
  • Iron Shield: Remove from Helmut.
  • Shell Shield: Treasure Map in the chest atop Lime Shelf Island.
  • Leather Boots: Remove from Frederica.
  • Shin Guards: Remove from Ornan, Mizuki, Rita, Kate, Axel, and Eugene.
  • Thief Shoes: Treasure Map on the Razril backstreets in crate at start of game.
  • Wing Boots: Treasure Map by searching the beached ship in Na-Nal.
  • Stone of Evasion: High chance to be dropped by Golden Hairballs in chests on the beach in Na-Nal and Mountain Mass Island.
  • Stone of Speed: High chance to be dropped by Angel Hairballs in chests at the Obel Ruins, two at Illuya Island, and Fort El-Eal.
  • Fire Rune Piece: Recruit Nalkul and Champo and win the Normal/Average mice game at the Nay-Kobold Settlement.
Of the above listed, only the Dragon Head Piece, Battle Suit, Ninja Garb, Ancient Vestment, and Wing Boots require more than basic materials to create. Also, covered in the walkthrough, you should automatically pick up a Scale Shield and Leather Boots by de-equiping Snowe before he leaves your party in Razril, then a Robe, Cotton Robe, Leather Boots, and a Battle Suit by changing Paula, Chiepoo, Sigurd, and Lino's equipment when they are in your party during the story. Other removals are specifically covered.

I want to give massive thanks and credit to Zaraktheus over at GameFAQs for his incredible work on the ins-and-outs of SaGa Frontier detailed in his mechanics guide you can find here. For decades, so many mysteries about this game persisted, but Zaraktheus' diligence uncovered them from the game's code itself and a lot of the information in this guide would simply not be possible without his work. Thank you again!

At present time, the mentioned Prologue chapter is not complete, but this is mainly due to planned changes I have for this guide upon my next character play. The Emelia guide was written over a number of years, due to many personal struggles and burnout, and I am not totally satisfied with how it all turned out and recognize that some retooling is necessary. That said, I hope that it is still useful to players; I poured everything I had into compiling and arranging as much information as I could into a very non-linear and complex game.
