Suikoden II - Chapter 21: Epilogue & Suikoden III

With the Beast Rune fallen, the party enters the throne room of L'Renouille. The throne is vacant; with Jowy's coat all that is left behind. Suddenly, the castle will begin to shake violently and your party members will pull Riou away if he attempts to stay and find Jowy.

As Riou and the others attempt to flee the crumbling castle, the others have gathered outside anxiously awaiting Riou's return. When he finally emerges safely, the scene will switch back to the Castle and Riou will be in his room. Your goal is to attend the gathering in the war room, but it's important that you DO NOT SAVE over your file before fighting the Beast Rune. While there are some new things in the epilogue, you can no longer change party members. Only make a separate file that you can use for importing over to Suikoden III. More on that at the end of the chapter.

In the war room, all the leaders from around the City-State have gathered and will voice their agreement for Riou to become the new leader of the unified nation. If you select "I understand" you will get a generic ending with a picture of Jowy waiting for you at the end...For the true ending, select "I can't do it." and Riou will exit the room to the dismay of the others.

Viktor and Flik will be waiting outside for Riou. Viktor, having seen this before with Tir, will convince Flik to let him go, but reminds him that he always has a home here. At this point, the whole world is open to you once more, but again, you cannot change party members, but if you'd like, you can return to Gregminster and add Tir back to your party, but you won't be doing any fighting. All the dialogue around your Castle and the towns have changed as well, if you are curious what everyone has to say about the Highland Kingdom having been defeated.

If you go to Sajah Village, there is now a rune shop open next to the item store. It's selling all of the high-grade elemental runes now (Including Cyclone), and to add insult to injury, in the rare finds you can find extremely limited items including Power Ring, Star Earrings, Phero Rune, and Blue Gate Runes. Bleh.

Head over to Kyaro Town and to the big tree at the back of Genkaku's dojo, where if you recall, you recruited Mukumuku at the very beginning of the game. Search the base of the tree to find a Hunter Rune, 30 Potch, and a rare antique: the Trio Painting. I can understand the Sajah rune shop being a kind of tongue-in-cheek thing from the developers, but why in the world didn't they make these items obtainable once Kyaro Town reopened for you? Not only could you have a complete collection of antiques, but you could get the Hunter Rune from here and then the Fortune and Prosperity Runes from the guardian deity event. Frustrating for a completionist.

You can search the spot again for a neat, but sad little scene with Riou, now all alone, beside the tree.

If you're curious about what the Trio Painting looks like in the bath. I suppose the fourth person on the end is suppose to be Genkaku? That's everything that is new in the game's epilogue. To see the true ending, take Riou to Tenzan Pass, northwest of Kyaro Town, and to the spot where Riou and Jowy promised to reunite if they ever became separated.

Jowy is waiting for you...He will bear his soul to Riou about all that has transpired between the two, but in the end, he is the last of the Blight family, and he must die to completely wipe Highland from the world.

You will enter a duel against Jowy. If you want to see the bad ending, simply defeat him. For the good ending, have Riou defend every turn. Eventually, Jowy will question why you won't fight and the battle will end.

Jowy will collapse and explain that he is dying anyway...He used too much of his Black Sword Rune keeping the Beast Rune from being unleashed on the world. He will request that Riou take his Black Sword Rune and unite it with the Bright Shield Rune to complete itself as the Rune of Beginning. Unless you want to see the bad ending, reject Jowy's attempts to combine the two True Runes.

Leknaat will appear before Riou and Jowy. The Black Sword and Bright Shield Runes will begin to resonate with one another and Leknaat will explain that the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny has joined with the power of the Rune of Beginning to heal Jowy. Leknaat will encourage the two, now freed from the destiny of the two Runes, to go out into the world and enjoy their new-found life. Jowy will join your party one final time and you will meet Shu as you attempt to leave Tenzan Pass. He will recall the day Nanami "died" and you will get a flashback of Nanami, Shu, and Dr. Huan talking inside the infirmary on that day. It looks like someone else is waiting for us too...

Riou and Jowy will rush to Kyaro Town to see Nanami and finally, all three friends with be reunited together. They will pack their things and set off to start a new life. The friends will stop by Harmonia to see Jillia and Pilika living happily together, then we will see what became of all of the 108 Stars of Destiny after the war, followed by the credits rolling.

This takes us to the end of Suikoden II and this completionst guide. I thank you for joining me on this journey and hope that it helped you reach whatever your goal may be with this game. In closing, I will cover the very minor things you can do to effect your play of Suikoden III by porting your Suikoden II save file over to it.

First, to successfully convert your save file from Suikoden II to III, you need to have saved your game after defeating the Beast Rune, during the epilogue. Then, on a Playstation 2, you need to copy your Suikoden II save file from your PS1 memory card, to a PS2 memory card. The initial bonus to III is you will receive a bonus play script when you recruit the character Nadir for your Castle. If you loaded data from Suikoden I into Suikoden II, you will receive a second play script as well. If you loaded data with one or both games, Riou, Tir, their army and castle names from their respective games will carry over as well. Lastly, Futch, Viki, Meg, and Gadget's base and weapon levels will effect their counterparts in Suikoden III; the latter two being the characters Belle and Gadget Z. That's it; pretty underwhelming compared to Suikoden I and II's data conversion, huh? Hope to join you in Suikoden III one of these days!
