Wild Arms - Chapter 5: Fall of Adlehyde

The next morning, Cecilia will depart from the group to return to the Castle while Rudy and Jack make a stop over at the ongoing Ruin Festival on the east-side of town. You will find Emma to the north of the Festival and she will fork over the 500 Gella she promised the party. Take a close look at the golems being displayed: you'll be getting to know them personally before this is all over. The Ruin Festival is a one-off event and can't be returned to, so make sure to go over the following couple of entries carefully.

There's a lady in the center of the Festival, behind Lolithia's display, that is selling Small Flowers for 2 Gella. This consumable item will increase a character's Luck level by one, and while you can acquire more later on, this is the best place in the game to easily stock up on it. Personally, I wouldn't leave without 99 of them; when Jack begins learning news skills and stealing items, his Luck will be very important.

In the lower-right corner of the Festival, there is a running mini-game to play. While you get absolutely nothing for breaking the highest record, the record-holder list is interesting. McDullen (Known as Magdalen in Alter Code: F), Jane Maxwell's butler, whom you will meet later, appears to have the top spot. In fifth place, Tony (Stark), the kid from the Berry Cave in Surf Village, has it. If you're a Wild Arms series veteran, using the dash to break McDullen's record should be easy.

To the upper-right of the Festival there is a frustrating ball-throwing mini-game to play. For 30 Gella, you can move your character around and throw a ball at the target, which will bounce randomly and reward you with a prize where it lands. Starting from the outside and drawing inward the prizes are: Heal Berry, Revive Fruit, Bullet Clip, and Secret Sign. Revive Fruit is great, but you can win it easier in another mini-game, but the Secret Sign is the big reward. These reduce the cost of one of Jack's fast draw skills by 1MP and are rather rare until late in the game. You can also sell these for an amazing 7500 Gella! Good luck getting one though; it took me well over an hour for the ball to land in the center, and there's no trick here either: it's entire randomly how the ball bounces. In the screenshot, you can see the position I threw the ball from with Rudy, but don't expect it to hit the bull's-eye very often.

Next door is a game of "chicken" where you can pay 100 Gella to dash at the wall, but need to stop just before hitting it. This is a waste of Gella, in my opinion. The two best items you can win are Magic Carrots and Potion Berries, while nice items, aren't worth the investment. If you would like to try anyway, try to hit the dash button when your character gets just about halfway between the two flowers at the bottom.

The Mole mini-game, in the lower-left corner of the Festival, has the most outstanding rewards to be had. For 100 Gella, you run around and mash X trying to pluck as many moles from the ground as you can in the time limit. Rewards are as followed:
  • 8 Moles: Revive Fruit
  • 10 Moles: Full Revive
  • 11 Moles: Bullet Clip
  • 12 Moles: Hardy Apple
  • 13 Moles: Agile Apple
  • 14 Moles: Mystic Apple
  • 15 Moles: Power Apple
  • 16 Moles: Nectar
Out of all of these, the Full Revive is best, in my opinion. Not only are these incredibly rare, but picking 10 moles is simple. The stat Apples are nice, as always, but later on in the game, you will be able to farm for these elsewhere. That leaves the Nectar, which will entirely recover a character's HP and status, but be prepared to wear your thumb out trying for it.

That's all for the mini-games at the Ruin Festival. Remember: once you advance the story, you cannot play these games or buy Small Flowers again. When you are ready to continue, talk to the lady beside the ball-throwing game who will ask you to look for her son carrying a red balloon. The people around the Festival will tell you that he already went back to town looking for his mother. The red balloon child is located just outside Mayor Cuthburt's house, but make sure that you save before talking to him.

All hell will break loose as the sky cracks open and beams of light rain down on Adlehyde throwing it into flames and chaos. You'll gain control of Rudy and Jack in the middle of town with a small window showing Cecilia surrounded by monsters at the castle gates.

There are Skeleton and Lizardman enemies scattered around town that you can engage. Nice change of pace from the random battles, huh? However, do not run to Cecilia's rescue yet.

There are ten townsfolk that you need to save and it is absolutely crucial that you do so. If you fail to save them, not only do you lose rewards, but they will be gone from the town of Adlehyde forever. As you move around fighting the monsters, they are all easily found, with the exception of the inn keeper who is cowering in the lower-left corner on the second floor of the inn. When you have all ten, fight off the group of monsters attacking Cecilia and she will rejoin your party. A timer will begin: which was for rescuing the townspeople, but since we already did that, we can go ahead and enter Adlehyde Castle.

The demon, Belselk, will enter the town and send a messenger to demand the royalty hand over the Tear Drop and for another to seize the golems from the Ruin Festival.

Back in control inside the castle, we find out that the King has been mortally wounded. The northern-most room of the castle you can use as an inn and to the right of there you will find all of the townspeople you rescued. There should be 10 NPCs here, if not, I recommend you reload your game and try again.

With Cecilia in the lead, we need to visit her wounded father. If you talk to the soldier to the left of the throne, he will move aside and you can access more of the castle. The King can be found in his room on the third floor. The messenger will come in with Belselk's demand that the Tear Drop be handed over, but the King will steadfastly refuse; stating that the Tear Drop is no mere piece of jewelry. Cecilia disagrees, wanting to turn the Tear Drop over to save her people, but the King will have her confined to her room.

Is that a Link cameo on top of Cecilia's bookcase? Anyway, Cecilia knows of a secret passage from the castle that leads out into the town where they can turn over the Tear Drop against the wishes of the King. However, the roaming soldiers will throw the party back into her room if they catch sight of her.

We need to make our way over to the castle kitchen. Thankfully, the soldiers don't seem to care if you dash right by, or even crash into them while doing so, just make sure not to stop right in front of their faces. Once you cross the ramparts and the stairs down, head north to the area where the guest room and the saved NPCs were, then dash quickly to the west to enter the kitchen. Talk to the head chief and he will open the secret passageway for the party (More like drop you into a pit).

You'll land perfectly upon a save point and can throw the crates nearby away to clear the path. Monsters in the sewers? Maybe during all this peace they should have been working on stamping them out, but whatever...The Jellyblob monster can drop Breeze Capes, which was Cecilia's starting armor and this enemy is the only place to obtain multiple. Also, you can use Mystic with the Breeze Cape to cast the Air Screen spell that temporarily raises a character's parry (evasion).

Take the path to the right-side and you can throw Hanpan over to the chest to obtain a Magic Carrot. Past the chest, work your way down, up, left, down, and follow the path left to the next treasure chest.

Which contains a Power Apple. Backtrack the way you came and take the downward path next to the torch, destroy the crates in your path, and take the path to the right.

The southern path has a chest containing an outstanding 3 Gella, surrounded by crates.

Then, a little further east, a Mystic Apple treasure. You'll notice an unreachable crate behind the chest, but you can ignore it, there is no way to access it. Return to the fork south of the torch you passed a bit ago and move downward along the path. When the path forks, keep along the left-hand side for the next chest.

It has an Agile Apple to add to your inventory. Backtrack, but instead of going left to the previous chest, take the southern path, continue south, but just before the crates, stop.

In the lower-left corner there is a chest that only Hanpan can reach with a Hardy Apple inside, then you can continue to the right.

And you'll find a chest with 120 Gella inside along with more inaccessible crates on the other side. Instead of taking the path you took to this chest, head upward, then to the right and follow the path, sticking to the left, onto the last chest of the sewers.

Snag the Magic Carrot inside and you can exit out of the sewers to the south after another save point.

You'll appear beside the previously-inaccessible treasure chest in an abandoned house in Adlehyde. Open the chest for a Potion Berry and then push the blocks out of the way to return to the town. All of the enemies have respawned, so you can fight them for more EXP and Gella (Recommended), or proceed to the center of town where a boss awaits. In fact, if you exit back down to the sewers, then return, the monsters will have spawned again.

Belselk will leave and spare more lives if Cecilia gives up the Tear Drop, which she, unfortunately, does. Jack, however, has a history with the demons and isn't going to just let Belselk just walk away.

Belselk is all physical, so cast Shield on Cecilia, then Armor Down, followed by Flame or using Mystic with Heal Berries afterward. Rudy with ARM Lock On and Jack with Psycho Break will be all you need to bring him down. He hits hard, but will waste multiple turns with taunts; just keep your HP up. Unfortunately, the party isn't strong enough yet to defeat a demon and Belselk with escape with the Tear Drop.

And his lackeys will carry the three golems off from the Ruin Festival...

Cecilia will apologize to her father for handing the Tear Drop over to the demons, but will vow to reclaim it, with the help of Rudy and Jack. Jack isn't having any of it, however, not appreciating the fact Cecilia hid her true identify from them, besides a general dislike for royalty. In an attempt to show her resolve to him, Cecilia will take Jack's sword and lop off her long, golden locks. Being at peace with the strength of his daughter, the King of Adlehyde will pass away.

A week will pass with the mourning for the King and fellow villagers killed in the demon attack. You regain control of Rudy and Jack and will need to rejoin with the Princess in her room on the second floor.

With the trio back together, enter the council room, which is just below Cecilia's room, and talk with Minister Johan. He'll direct the party to Milama and a Guardian Shrine over the Mountain Pass.

You'll have noticed 10 chests spread out in the council room. There is one chest for each citizen you saved during the demon attack. Open them for a number of good items and Gella; including a Lucky Card, which doubles the amount of EXP and Gella you receive from battle, and a Missanga accessory. When equipped, the Missanga will raise a character's Luck by one, which is okay, but, in my opinion, should only be used for certain situations, like stealing or trying to learn one of Jack's fast draws. From here on, if you need to return to the Adlehyde sewers, the pit inside the castle kitchen will be open to drop into, but you cannot enter through the town because of the blocks.

In the castle town, if you enter the mayor's house and talk to the child here, you can donate funds to the restoration of Adlehyde. This is entirely optional to finish the game, but will eventually be necessary for 100% completion. At the moment, you can donate increments of 500, 1000, and 2000 Gella, by donating, leaving, then returning to the town. Even at 2000 Gella, there is nothing tangible to be obtained, so don't feel like you need to do this at the moment. Before you leave, consider purchasing a few Antidotes and Medicines; a monster in the coming dungeon will be using Poison and Disease attacks. Once you are prepared, exit Adlehyde and journey west to the Mountain Pass.
